Keeps on Giving

Posted by parsingtime on April 30, 2008

So for Husband’s birthday today I made him a special meal. I failed to mention that the chicken tikka masala had cream in it so he didn’t take a lactaid and I managed to poison his lactose intolerant self.

Happy Birthday, indeed.

Yummy Sangria

Posted by parsingtime on April 20, 2008

So I had people over for appetizers and drinks last night before we headed out to dinner and I made Sangria for the first time. I really love Sangria because it tastes fruity and yummy without the strong alcochol taste.

Anyway here is the recipe…it was definitely a hit last night.

1 (750-ml) bottle red wine  (I used Vina Borgia a $6 Spanish red wine)
1/4 cup brandy (flavored, regular I don’t think it matters)
1/4 cup orange flavored liqueur (I used off brand triple sec that was about $9 for a bottle, real triple sec is expensive)
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice (I put about 4 table spoons because I didn’t know what to do with the rest of a squeezed orange)
1/4 cup sugar (if you have a sweet apple I would put a bit less sugar)
1/2 orange, thinly sliced
1/2 lemon, thinly sliced
1 unwaxed apple, cored, and cut into thin wedges (I cubed)
1/2 a bottle sparkling water, chilled

Combine everything but the sparkling water in a large plastic container or glass pitcher. Cover and chill completely, for a few hours. When ready to serve, add the sparkling water. Don’t add too much because it will taste watery, I would just add two splashes per glass.

This tastes a lot like what you get in Tapas restaurants.  Also I imagine you could do this same recipe and replace the fruit with whatever you like, strawberries, peaches, raspberries etc.

Well Random and I made it out for the weekend despite my delay in arrival. We were supposed to go to Montreal but ended up in the woods of Vermont, New Hampshire and randomly Salem, MA.

Despite being almost killed in a hotel scene reminiscent of The Shining and our plans being a bit spoiled by the six inches of snow and ice still on the ground we managed to have a good time and caught up after not seeing each other for NINE months. Which holy moly is a long time. What’s super awesome about Random and I is that even though it has been nine months we pick up the conversation right where it left off. Well not quite where it left off because the last time I saw her we were in the midst of a monsoon and wondering if we had picked up any disease from all the polluted India water (Random is the ONLY PERSON I KNOW who made it through India without a  lower digestive system incident).

Anyway, we managed to visit the King Arthur Flour Bakery, Ben and Jerry’s and ate some good food so despite the snow and ice covered hiking trails we managed to eat our way through several pounds of sugar.

On another note, people are always telling me to go visit Salem and that the witch museums are FUN and INTERESTING.  We went to the Salem Witch Museum and walked out because it was basically a retelling of The Crucible with scary wax figures in oversized dioramas. Dioramas are not a museum people.

Random is back safely in NY and I’m back in Boston with six boxes of busy work staring me in the face so I better get to it.

PS Random next time we shall go somewhere exotic as we have more luck in Southeast Asia than Northeastern US.! 🙂

I Wish

Posted by parsingtime on April 7, 2008

Best thing my mother in law said to me tonight: “You look like you lose the weight.”

What I really love is that she says it just like my grandmother, whom I adore.  Unfortunately it isn’t true, but I’ll take it.

Seriously, I had one of nicest dinners I’ve ever had with my in-laws tonight. It was just the three of us and the dynamic was different and I felt more relaxed. I guess I just need to get rid of Husband and SIL more often.

Questions to Myself

Posted by parsingtime on April 3, 2008

These are the thoughts I had between 8am and 9pm this morning.

Could Robert Mugabe (a man I’ve hated since I first read about him in a fiction book) really be finished as the dictator of Zimbabwe? Will he admit defeat?

Is that woman really wearing peep toe pumps with reinforced toe hose? That’s a fashion no no right? In fact I don’t think you are supposed to wear hose at all with sandals/open toe shoes.

Should I eat the donut holes in the kitchen or my high fiber cereal and an apple?
Why does my high fiber cereal taste like mint? Huh, Orbitz really must be strong to penetrate mint flavor through the ziploc bag.

Why does my mother call me to complain about things that my Dad has done for his entire life?  Why do I call Random about things Husband will probably do for the rest of my life ? Why do women do this to themselves (this being make themselves crazy)?
Why do women have rocky relationships with their in-laws? Do we bring the drama on ourselves?

How did a salad, steamed broccoli, vitamin water, pineapple and a piece (not a bar a small piece) of chocolate end up costing $20 at Eatzis? Maybe the Economist is right about the price of food. And didn’t Ted Turner say we were going to be cannibals soon? Hmm, Was he talking about global warming and how we won’t be able to grow food? I can’t remember.

My Subconscience Wants Shoes

Posted by parsingtime on April 2, 2008

So for some unknown reason I packed my very cute green flats from Argentina instead of my go-with-every-outfit-I-packed black flats.

I have absolutely no recollection of packing the green flats, but I thought I had packed my book and the Economist for the plane and neither one of those things were in my bag when I looked so I might be going senile.

So now I have to go buy shoes because I’m pretty sure my grey slacks don’t go with green shoes.

Also, being in Dallas made me realize that leaving the hotel with a moisturized face, lip gloss and nothing else means I stick out as the only female over the age of 10 not wearing makeup. Gah.

I Heart Central Market

Posted by parsingtime on April 1, 2008

I miss Texas grocery stores…I spent 20 minutes in Central Market today just wondering around marveling at all the fresh produce that doesn’t look like it will mold or turn into mush as soon as I take it home.

What makes me even more pathetic is that I’m in Texas for business…and had absolutely no reason to be at Central Market.

I’m going to miss Boston when we move but I won’t miss the sucky Stop and Shops or Shaws.
