More Annoyed than Amused

A Thousand Splendid Suns

I’m sure many of you have read the Kite Runner (and if you haven’t go read it now) but the author Khaled Hosseini has come out with a new book called A Thousand Splendid Suns.

I just finished reading it and wanted to tell you that it one of the best books I’ve read this year (I’ve read 6-7 books some of them considered literary classics on those 1000 books to read before you die lists).  Hosseini interweaves 30 years of Afghani history in with the story of two women married to the same ass wipe (and that is a gentle description of a man whose balls should be cut off with a machete and then he should have to eat them) of a man.

I won’t tell you too much about the story but I want to say that the reason I’ve enjoyed his two novels is because the characters are so well written. You feel like you can identify with them, you feel empathy for these two women and you know that there are probably two women (at least) in Afghanistan who have lived through something very similar to this novel.

It is just a fictional novel but it makes me feel lucky to have been born in a time and place that would never treat me the way these women were treated.   The book is sad but you are left feeling hopeful when it ends.

It is a two thumbs up recommend. Go read it.
